Our Purpose

To empower our community through information and education to attain optimal health through natural ways for themselves and future generations.

We put control of the birthing process back into the hands of women and their support systems. We offer extraordinary prenatal, birthing, and postpartum care, as well as well woman gynecological services.

Life has a way of allowing us opportunities to increase our self-esteem, self-confidence, and our ability to understand one another. For women, "growing", "glowing", and "birthing" a baby is a crucial, divine episode in one's lifespan. We at Dyekora Sumda Midwifery can not imagine doing any work besides nurturing and facilitating this natural process for the woman and her family. We believe that YOU are delivering your baby and therefore have the right and responsibility to birth YOUR way.

Our concern for your health doesn’t begin and end with pregnancy…

"Thank you so much for assisting us with the birth of our son, Thelonius Miller. When we need help, God always provides us with the best service; that’s what He did when He sent us your way."

-- May all your efforts be blessed, One Love, Charles & Tasha Miller

"Memaniye,
Thank you so much for the incredible job you did bringing Emily into the world. While the labor was difficult, I couldn’t have asked for a more nurturing, supportive, knowledgeable midwife. You truly were amazing. I know Lily feels the same way."

-- Thanks again. You’re the best, Michael

We support and educate...

you to maintain a healthy pregnancy, birth, postpartum... and more.

We are a home birth practice, established in 2003, serving the five boroughs of New York City, Long Island and Connecticut. The practice of midwifery is an ancient tradition that reaches back to the beginning of time when women assisted other women to bring new life into the world. From Ancient Egypt (Khemet) to Western Africa to the Granny Midwife of the Southern United States, the midwife of the community was the healer, the herbalist, the soothsayer. Our name, Dyekora Sumda, taken from an ancient West African language, means Circle of Life.

Nya Memaniye Cinque

CERTIFIED NURSE MIDWIFE

GREETINGS!

My name is Nya Memaniye Cinque and it’s my pleasure to tell you a little bit about myself. I’ve been a Midwife since 1998 when I graduated from SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn. I’ve worked in hospital and birthing center settings and have been in the homebirth setting since 2001 when I took on my first “private practice” client. I was a labor and delivery nurse for 10 years prior to returning to school for midwifery. I am also a certified childbirth educator although I haven’t taught regularly in a long time.

My path to Midwifery started in 1987 when I gave birth to my son at home. He was my second child. I had my first in a hospital and the two experiences were like night and day. I decided in that moment, feeling the euphoria of that experience, that assisting women in childbirth at home with as many loving, supportive people around her as she wanted was THE THING to do in my life. If you do the math and add up the years it took me awhile to get here and the road wasn’t easy but the joy of the work has balanced out the difficulties. My journey has helped me to be the midwife that I am now. My journey has helped me to be the person that I am now. I believe and have seen that each person’s journey is different and exciting and interesting. We meet people and have experiences that teach us about ourselves; who we are, what we like and don’t like, what we are capable of. Birth is an experience that is a part of your journey. I am so grateful and feel so blessed to have shared and participated in the many wonderful journeys of the women whose births I have attended. They could never know how much they have taught me. I am humbled in the presence of the Creator’s work. That’s what midwifery is for me. The ability to assist women to do what the Creator has intended them to do, to grow within themselves and bring forth new life.

I have had five birth experiences of five wonderful children in my own journey. They teach me as I teach them every day. I am grateful for their presence in my life. I am also very grateful for my husband who has been my consistent support.

I love to travel. I have traveled to Cuba where I did my internship as a finishing student midwife. It was a wonderful exchange between our group of midwives and the Cuban government to learn from each other about birth practices in each of our countries. That experience made me see that birth, like music, is a universal language. Universal in the goal and the spirit of the process and yet individual in what a woman and her family gains from it. I plan to travel more in the future and perhaps one day I’ll be blogging you guys from different parts of the world!

I thank you for taking the time to read what I have to share with you. I invite you to explore other areas of our site to learn more about what we do and most of all I invite you to come and meet us in person.

I look forward to seeing you!

ASSOCIATE PRACTITIONER / CLIENT ADVOCATE

As Client Advocate I make sure you have the information and support you need along your path to optimal health.  As an Associate Practitioner, I provide Nutrition Response Testing services and nutritional consultations to clients.  I believe wholeheartedly in the body’s innate wisdom and unique power to heal from within, given the right environment and proper nutrition.

Pursuing Advanced Clinical Training in Applied Clinical Nutrition and Nutrition Response Testing from Ulan Nutritional Systems, INC. was the obvious next step for me after graduating from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition as a Certified Holistic Health Coach, completing Sacred Woman, A female Rite of Passage Program and graduating from Temple University with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work. Most importantly I am a mom of two daughter and had two wonderful homebirth experiences with Memaniye.

Pregnancy, the experience of labor and giving birth at home, against the tide of fear from family members, was an empowering and defining moment.  The opportunity to work at Dyekora Sumda was synchronicity at its best! What I love most about working here is I am able to encourage women during a most sensitive time in their life and I am able to guide, educate and encourage people in a personal way along their path to wellness. I enjoy being in a family oriented, holistic environment, surrounded by people who get the connection between food & nutrition as the raw building blocks for our bodies whether a new baby or an elder!

OFFICE MANAGER

Greetings All! My name is Ali-Yah and I am the Office Manager here at Dyekora Sumda. It had always been in my spirit to pursue work within my community that would utilize my Virgo strengths - organization, hard work, compassion and strategizing behind the scenes. I’d just left my corporate job of over 8+ years when I was presented with the opportunity to work with Memaniye and Niara. And it is a true blessing when you can wake up in the morning looking forward to your work day. The warmth, love, support and overall education I encounter on a daily basis is a testament to the environment that Memaniye has created. I look forward to meeting you and assisting with your journey!
